The Healing Arts Program explores the intersections of art, culture, and medicine to reduce harm, relieve social suffering, and promote positive health behaviors.


By integrating literature from creative therapies and arts research in these offerings, we aim to foster a holistic approach to well-being that empowers healthier living for individuals and communities through the transformative power of the arts..

Caregivers’ Expressions on mental wellness

Are you a caregiver, physician, or nurse with a passion for artistic expression? Do you believe in the power of creativity to heal and inspire?

“Healing Hands" aims to expand what it means to be a caregiver by showcasing their creative talents while exploring the theme of mental wellness.


Through diverse artistic modalities, we seek to shed light on the journey of caregivers navigating the complexities of self-care, compassion, and resilience, particularly since the challenges brought forth by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sent to Healing Arts & Culture partners network to ensure reach and number of applicants.

Jury Selection Process

July 2-July 10

Jurors are selected based on their experience, expertise, and work in the local Arts and Health community to ensure diversity and equitable practices.

Artist Announcement

End July

Final selections are announced to the community and artists are notified.

Opening Exhibition

August 9

Jurors’ choice winners are announced and exhibition officially opens.

Closing Exhibition

Community’s Choice winner is selected and announced.

Home caregiver assistance

Who is a caregiver?

  • Professional caregiving services to individuals with healthcare needs, including but not limited to physicians, nurses, home health aides, and personal care attendants.
  • Unpaid caregivers, including family members or individuals providing physical, emotional, or logistical support to a loved one with a chronic illness, disability, or aging-related needs, are eligible to participate.

Rules of participation

  • Applicants must be 18 years of age or older
  • Residents of Houston, TX or surrounding areas
  • Collective entries must designate ONE lead artist to submit the application on behalf of the group
  • Individual applicants may submit up to 2 artworks
  • Artwork submitted must have been created in the last 10 years during the time in which the artist was a caregiver

All submissions will be reviewed by The Health Museum staff for eligibility.

Eligible entries will be reviewed by a panel of jurors, with finalists being notified and announced in late July 2024.

Length of video or trailer shall not exceed 3 minutes.

  • Book Excerpts


Length of submissions shall not exceed a 5 minute read, or 650 words.

Artwork should reflect personal experiences, perspectives, or insights related to mental health, self-care, resilience, or healing as it pertains to caregiving.

Photography Exhibition in Art Gallery

Artwork guidelines

  • Must be original works
  • Visual artwork must not exceed 40x40x40 in any direction
  • Literature must not exceed a 5-minute read or 650 words and be submitted in a PDF format
  • performance works with a maximum length of 3 minutes
  • No logos or branding
  • Signatures are encouraged.
  • Must not share excessive or indicating personal health information


All artwork must be suitable for all viewing ages and reflect the mission and vision of The Health Museum

Submission Process

  • One entry per artwork, two entries per artist
  • For visual and literary arts, upload up to 3 images (2MB-10MB, 150 DPI minimum)
  • Visual artwork must not exceed 40x40x40 in any direction
  • Literature must not exceed a 5-minute read or 650 words and be submitted in a PDF format
  • Share a link for video or audio submissions of music or performance works with a maximum length of 3 minutes

Last day to apply is June 23, 2024

Terms and conditions

  • All artwork must be submitted by the creator of the artwork - plagiarism is not tolerated and will result in disqualification
  • If your artwork is selected, you are responsible for arranging delivery and pick-up of the artwork
    • Late deliveries may not be accepted without permission in writing from the Healing Arts Program Manager
  • Entries must be tastefully rendered for public viewing of all ages. Questionable or irrelevant subject matter will result in disqualification at the discretion of The Health Museum
  • Entries that do not meet requirements may be rejected. However, we are open to creativity, so please contact the Healing Arts Program Manager with any questions.
  • Any personal health information shared in the artwork (including patients and family members) must be respected and done so with the understanding that it may be publicly displayed as part of the exhibition.

Winning Artists

Jurors’ Choice

  • Winning artists will be invited to work with the Amazing Body Store to reprint their artwork on tote bags, magnets, etc. and receive special rewards from The Health Museum.
  • Honorable mentions will receive special rewards from The Health Museum.

Community’s Choice

  • The community will be able to vote for their favorite pieces, online and onsite. Community’s Choice artists will be invited to work with the Amazing Body Store to reprint their artwork on tote bags, magnets, etc. and receive special rewards from The Health Museum.

OPen q&A

  1. As an individual artist, am I allowed to submit two pieces of artwork in one application? The pieces I have in mind develop a beautiful meaning when presented together.
  2. Is it acceptable to have my signature on the bottom right of my artwork?
  3. Should I attach a screenshot of this communication along with my other entries, or should it be placed in a different part of the application?
